Sweet Heart Memorial

Sweet Heart Memorial is situated along Jackson Road and is the oldest monument on the post (unveiled on November 23, 1918) and remains one of the last physical remnants of World War I at Devens.

The Sweet Heart Memorial symbolizes the importance of romance, love and marriage, especially when the people involved are about to face the dangers and horrors of war and is dedicated “To those citizens of the United States, who at the call of humanity laid aside their vocations to become soldiers of the Grand Army of Liberty.”

According to folklore, the monument was constructed of stones brought from all over the country by the Army’s loved ones.

Many servicemen and women celebrate their weddings by being photographed in front of this memorial.
