Walking through a doorway onto one of New England Studios’ giant sound stages, Chris Byers smiles, seeing the facility never gets old, even after almost 30 years in the movie business. The 1982 graduate of Cushing Academy in Ashburnham is living the dream and developing a future for movie making in Massachusetts. Although the film studios on the former Army base have just opened with four, 18,000-square foot, 49-foot high sound stages and all the bells and whistles needed to film a major production, the company is already looking to a future that could double what it is doing now.
The first movie using the studios is “Tumbledown,” a production which is also being filmed at locations in Worcester and Middlesex counties. It is the studio’s test case of what is hoped to be regular movie and television productions.
