Sterling has expressed interest in forming a regional coalition of nearby cities and towns, led by Leominster and its Mayor Dean Mazzarella, to determine whether the state-run 4,400 acre mixeduse community known as Devens could be causing economic losses for the area.
The Sterling Board of Selectmen directed Town Administrator Jeffrey Ritter on Oct. 8 to continue discussions with Mazzarella about the effort to generate a regional voice to request a study that would show the local impact from continued redevelopment of the abandoned United States Army installation previously known as Fort Devens.
“Ultimately, I can’t see the state not wanting to do this,’’ Mazzarella said. “They talk about helping this area come back and they talk about jobs. I think they should be right there to help us.”
