Governor, We’ve got a Problem in Devens

Gov. Charlie Baker and his economic-development team should take notice of what’s happening — or what’s not happening — at the state’s would-be 352nd community known as Devens.

For the second time in three years, the three municipalities sharing decision-making power on Devens’ future — Ayer, Harvard, and Shirley — failed to arrive at a unanimous consensus on a major rezoning issue, which, according to MassDevelopment, would have been the impetus to lure a huge biotech company to a designated parcel at the former U.S. Army base.

If MassDevelopment is to be believed, the state has suffered a significant loss of a large regional employer that would have supplied good jobs for hundreds of highly skilled workers in the Bay State.
