DEVENS — In one of two public hearings the Devens Enterprise Commission held Tuesday night, commissioners voted unanimously to grant a Level 2 Unified Permit to SMC Ltd., a global contract manufacturer that has leased part of the former Gillette building on Independence Drive.
The Wisconsin-based company plans to produce sterile plastic medical devices, such as artificial hearts, in the new 200,000-square-foot Devens facility, occupying about half the building and consolidating operations from two other plants in Sterling and Leominster.
The application called for major renovations inside and substantial exterior changes at the site, which has been vacant for some time and is attached by a tunnel to another building on Saratoga with the same owner, DEC Director Peter Lowitt said.
