DEVENS — A veteran state police sergeant is expected to survive after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while transferring a shotgun to a new vehicle at the department’s Emergency Vehicle Operations Center in Devens on Tuesday morning, according to the state police.
The trooper, who was identified only as a 51-year-old sergeant who has been on the forece since 1987, was flown by medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to a statement issued by the state police.
The trooper, who is assigned to Troop H Headquarters in South Boston, was transferring a department-issued shotgun from his old cruiser to a newly issued one when the weapon accidentally discharged, hitting him in the leg.
