DEVENS — Fort Devens Museum presents a documentary film, “Model Ts to War: American Ambulances on the Western Front 1914-1918” on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. The film shows how many Americans did not wait for our country to declare war in 1917 to join the fight against German aggression in Europe. While some became pilots or served as nurses in the conflict or correspondents to record it between 1914 and 1917, others drove ambulances for the American Field Services on the Western Front in France. Light refreshments will be served. The museum is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. If the weather is questionable, call the museum at 978-772-1286 to ensure that it is open.
In other news, Fort Devens Museum is conducting a World War I focused trip to Italy from May 11-25 in the area Ernest Hemingway wrote about in “A Farewell to Arms.” Flying from Boston and spending two days in Venice, the trip will include many interesting and scenic sites including Caporetto, Slovenia; Cortina in the snow-capped Dolomites; and Asolo “the pearl of the Veneto.” Ellie Buford, formerly of Harvard and now living near Venice, is directing the tour. For additional information, itinerary, and price details please contact Kara Fossey at 978-772-1286, or Duane Barber at 978-456-8847.
