Hildreth Elementary School second-graders showcased their personal immigration history projects at the school’s Heritage Fair on March 4 in Harvard.
Second-grade teacher Cindy Steeves helped organize the event, as an extension of the social studies curriculum. Steeves has lived abroad and also taught her students some French and Spanish as part of the unit.
Students researched their family heritage and how parents, grandparents or great-grandparents came to America. They brought home a packet to work with their parents on ancestry and then chose their country based on those discussions. The students read through library books and conducted Internet research with their teachers. Ultimately, each student created a trifold presentation that highlighted the food, clothing, sports, nature, culture and other facts about their country.
